A routine fall maintenance visit for this gas furnace and its evaporator coil. When the furnace was opened up, the installation manual was still sitting in the bottom of the furnace, after about ten years of service by another company.
The evaporator coil was severely corroded and most likely leaking refrigerant. The heat exchanger was heavily rusted, and a universal igniter had been installed that did not fit properly.
With the system at the end of its life, replacement options had already been shared with the homeowner earlier in the year. They are moving forward with a new system.

It was replaced with a new Force boiler, plus a new expansion tank, feed valve and circulator pump, and hauled the old boiler away. The upstairs is heating properly again, right at the start of heating season.

Air Comfort installed a Trane 2-stage 80% gas furnace, a Trane 16 SEER single-stage AC and an Aprilaire media air cleaner for better filtration, then hauled the old equipment away. An October maintenance visit on a Shrewsbury home's gas furnace found a heavily rusted heat exchanger and a corroded evaporator coil that was most likely leaking, so the system was at the end of its life. In early November, Air Comfort replaced the old Comfortmaker furnace and AC with a new Trane furnace and Trane AC condenser, then hauled the old equipment away. Air Comfort is locally owned, and in-home estimates on new systems are free.
