We went out on a routine fall maintenance visit for this gas furnace and its evaporator coil. When our tech opened it up, the installation manual was still sitting in the bottom of the furnace, after about ten years of service by another company.
The evaporator coil was severely corroded and most likely leaking refrigerant.
The heat exchanger was heavily rusted. We also found a universal igniter that had been installed and did not fit properly.
With the system at the end of its life, we had already shared replacement options with the homeowner earlier in the year. They are moving forward with a new system.
